Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

What should I bring with my pet?

  • Proof of vaccinations (Inoculations are only valid if administered within the last year and at least 14 days prior to admission).
  • Proof of de-worming and parasite control (we can administer these at a fee if required).
  • All animals except dogs must have their own cages.
  • Cats must at least arrive secured in a travel box or a cage. Please do not bring your cat unsecured on a harness or collar and lead. Most cats do not like travelling and may be a bit stressed on arrival. In addition, something might just spook him during admission and cause him to make a run for it. You are welcome to leave your cat’s travel box with him in the apartment.
  • It is helpful if cats and dogs wear a soft collar with their owner's details inscribed. Please note that it is not good practice for dogs to wear a choker except when being trained or taken for a walk.
  • Contact information for your vet.
  • Any medication your pet requires.
  • A blanket, towel or piece of old clothing with your smell on it to make your pet feel at home. You are welcome to bring it’s bed, but we do not guarantee that any item will not be chewed up! Should this happen, we take no liability for it.
  • Some special toys or treats (optional).

Do you accept credit cards?

Regretfully not. We do, however, have Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) facilities available at our offices where clients can use our computers for the necessary transactions. You will need your internet banking details to utilise this service.

Which vaccinations are required for my dog?

Please note that Vaccination certificates are required at admission.

It is compulsory that dogs be immunised against:

  • Parvo virus
  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis and
  • Rabies

It is recommended that all dogs be immunised against Kennel cough

Parvo, Distemper and Hepatitis vaccinations are only valid if the dog has been vaccinated within the period 12 months to 14 days prior to admission.

Kennel Cough vaccination is only valid it the dog has been vaccinated in the period 6 months to 14 days prior to admission.

Rabies vaccinations are only valid if the dog has been vaccinated within the period 12 months to 14 days prior to admission with respect to a first vaccination. With respect to dogs that have been vaccinated with a follow-up rabies vaccination within a 12 month period following the first vaccination, the valid period is extended to three years before admission.

Dogs over the age of three that have previously been correctly and regularly vaccinated may be admitted at the discretion of the Pet Apartments management even though their vaccinations may fall outside of the limits described above. This is because, as per immunology criteria, the dog is in all probability sufficiently immune to withstand the normal diseases.

Dogs over the age of 7 that have been previously been correctly and regularly vaccinated are exempt from further vaccinations.

Which vaccinations are required for my cat?

It is compulsory that cats be immunised against

  • Feline Enteritis
  • Pneumonitis
  • Sniffles
  • Rabies

All vaccinations have to be carried out at least 14 days prior to admission. The Feline Enteritis vaccination must not be older than 12 months and Pneumonitis and Sniffles not older than 6 months.

Rabies vaccinations are only valid if the cat has been vaccinated within the period 12 months to 14 days prior to admission with respect to a first vaccination. With respect to cats that have been vaccinated with a follow-up rabies vaccination within a 12 month period following the first vaccination, the valid period is extended to three years before admission.

What if my dog gets sick?

Whilst we are not vets, we have years of experience and will pick up very quickly if your pet needs veterinary attention. It is for this reason that all the animals are fed by ourselves or under our personal supervision: often a shift in eating habits already gives an indication of a potential problem developing.

Your pet’s health is of paramount importance and we will personally take your pet to our vet on call. Should our vet have any queries, we have your vet’s contact information on file so that they can communicate re the veterinary history.  In the event that the matter is serious we will contact you, but generally we will not spoil your holiday.

You will be responsible for the costs involved.

My dog is difficult to handle – will you be able to cope with him?

Frikkie has a reputation that he has never not been able to handle a dog, whatever the problem. We have in the past taken in many dogs that other kennels cannot cope with and more often than not given them back to the owners with the problem solved.

Will my pets be kept together?

We try our utmost to keep all the pets from one family together. However, we cannot keep large dogs together with cats, rabbit or birds.

Our new suites (still under construction) will be able to house small (toy) indoor dogs such as Yorkies, Min-Pins and Chihuahuas together with cats.

Who will feed my pet and what if he does not want to eat?

Pets are fed either by ourselves or under our personal supervision. We make sure that each animal eats correctly. If they are feeling a bit homesick on their first day, sitting with them and feeding some special treats usually does the trick.

Can I bring my own food and/or treats?

You are most welcome and we will see that these are given.

If I bring my own food, do I get a discount?

Regret not. We pride ourselves on the quality and palatability of the food we feed and no animal ever goes out leaner than they were when they came in.

In addition, preparing and administering special food for any client takes time and effort, and we do not charge for this.

My pet is scared of fireworks, how will he cope without me?

Luckily, as we are in a rural area, we have no close neighbours who shoot off fireworks. At worst fireworks can occasionally be heard faintly in the far distance.

We also play music to the dogs all the time which helps sooth the animals. In severe cases we can also administer calming medication.

My pet requires chronic medication – who will administer?

We make use of pill distribution boxes to ensure that each animal gets it’s medication on time. This is administered personally by management or senior staff. Please note that there is a charge for this service.

My dog is a digger – how do you deal with this?

It is important that we know this up front. We will place the dog in a kennel with “dig proof” edges to prevent him escaping - no problem if he digs in the middle of the kennel, we will just fill it so that he can have fun and dig some more!

My dog is a climber/jumper – how do you deal with this?

It is also important that we know this up front. We will place the dog in a climb/jump proof kennel to prevent him escaping.

If I arrive back early from holiday, will I get a refund?

We regret that this will not be possible. If a space was booked and a deposit paid, it is probable that another guest was refused as a result. In addition, staff and other overheads incurred to give your pets the care they deserve still have to be paid for.

Why am I charged for the day of arrival and the day of departure?

Unlike a hotel that specifies all it’s guests have to book out before 12h00, we do not want you to rush your holiday so we will ensure that your pet’s apartment is ready at any time during our business hours on your day of arrival as well as departure.

Can we collect outside your published hours? The kids are driving us crazy!

We are willing to open-up at a surcharge. Prices available on request.

Why should I observe your business hours?

Caring for pets outside their home environments is almost a 24/7 operation and we need uninterrupted time to spend with our charges. Also, because of this, our staff work shifts and need time off, leaving only a skeleton staff at times that cannot still cope with clients.

If we catered for clients outside the stipulated hours, our costs will significantly increase; and we will have to charge our clients accordingly.

If something happens to my dog, can I blame Pet Apartments?

Whilst we take every care possible, there are always risks involved and we cannot be held accountable.  Our Terms and Conditions are always applicable and includes an indemnity.
